For the second consecutive year, Baylor College of Medicine has been ranked the 10th best medical school in the country. And, BCM ranked in the top 10 percent in all major categories in the annual U.S. News & World Report survey released today. "Across the board – the medical school, the graduate school, the allied health school – Baylor College of Medicine was in the top listings," said Dr. Peter G. Traber, BCM president and CEO. "It is this commitment to excellence, in all areas of the college, that shows our strength as a top tier institution." Highlights of the annual survey: BCM ranked 10th among the 125 medical schools with a research focus, the same ranking as last year. The U.S. Senate this week passed a measure introduced by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) to award the Congressional Gold Medal to pioneering cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, chancellor emeritus of Baylor College of Medicine and director of the DeBakey Heart Center at BCM. "Dr. DeBakey is a legendary surgeon, teacher and inventor who has devoted his entire life to the health and well being of others," Hutchison said. "His contributions to society are immeasurable, and many Americans live longer, healthier lives as a result of his commitment to cardiovascular medicine." Sen. Hutchison introduced the legislation to honor DeBakey. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-Louisiana) are original co-sponsors. The bill passed by unanimous vote in the Senate. Volunteers are being recruited for a cholesterol study at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston to raise "good" cholesterol while reducing "bad" levels at the same time. The study, part of an international initiative called AIM HIGH (Atherothrombosis Intervention in Metabolic Syndrome with Low HDL/High Triglycerides and Impact on Global Health Outcomes), will evaluate the usefulness of a comprehensive solution for cholesterol patients by testing a refined version of the vitamin niacin, a known HDL booster, in conjunction with statins, which lower LDL. A low HDL level is the most common cholesterol problem found in people with heart disease. Men or women with low HDL readings (less than 40 for men and less than 50 for women) are encouraged to enroll. Prospective study participants can call 713-798-3171.
