The U.S. Senate this week passed a measure introduced by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) to award the Congressional Gold Medal to pioneering cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, chancellor emeritus of Baylor College of Medicine and director of the DeBakey Heart Center at BCM. "Dr. DeBakey is a legendary surgeon, teacher and inventor who has devoted his entire life to the health and well being of others," Hutchison said. "His contributions to society are immeasurable, and many Americans live longer, healthier lives as a result of his commitment to cardiovascular medicine." Sen. Hutchison introduced the legislation to honor DeBakey. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-Louisiana) are original co-sponsors. The bill passed by unanimous vote in the Senate. The U.S. House of Representatives must pass and the President must sign the measure before the medal can be awarded. The Congressional Gold Medal is the …
